From Above

In January of 1999 I visited Jamaica after some twenty years. I was so moved by the flight into the island that tears came to my eyes as the aircraft approached the island. I looked across the waters and saw the setting sun and the Spirit of God inspired me to begin writing … I stopped after a while and when the aircraft was on its final approach to the Montego Bay airport, the island was now dark with dots of flickering lights spread across the countryside; then I began to write again and the following poem was the result.

FROM ABOVE
Rev. Dr. Winston Watson

I view the world from above,
In flight as a boundless dove

To touch the clouds and feel their form,
From setting sun to days dawn

The shimmering light of a sunlit sky,
In it, with my wings I did fly

The glory of God manifest in sight,
O wonder, his creation, his delight

With grace I move, I turn here and I turn there,
Beholding him, His presence near

O creature, what a wonder is God,
See his world, the place his feet have trod

Hold on to him, eternal in his place,
Honor him who saved us by his grace

How grand the view from above,
Behold what he created in Love

Though darkness falls,
The light it cannot forestall

For he is the power, strong and tall,
One true God, ruler of all

The light must through darkness shine,
To give us of the Spirit's wine

Grand, euphoric, splendid is God,
My life, my song, my father, my Lord
